Summary

After Leon Edwards defeated Kamaru Usman to retain the welterweight title to cap off Saturday's UFC 286 event, UFC president Dana White announced that Colby Covington would be getting the next shot at Edwards. With contenders in play, and notable divisional matchups in play, is that the fight to make? On an all-new edition of On To the Next One, MMA Fighting's Mike Heck and Alexander K. Lee attempt to answer that question following the promotion's pay-per-view event in London. Additionally, future matchups are discussed for Usman after his second consecutive loss to Edwards, Justin Gaethje following his Fight of the Night win over Rafael Fizev, along with fellow main card winners Gunnar Nelson, Jennifer Maia, Marvin Vettori, and more. 0:28.0

We appreciate you guys check it out the program. As we're discussing the aftermath of UFC 286 from a matchmaking perspective.

0:36.0

We are back on this Sunday morning. I am Mike Heck and the matchmaking crowns are back following the OCs return to London and speaking of crowns. Let us introduce the Prince of positivity himself.

0:48.0

He is the co host co matchmaker and he's our best friend, dammit. Let us say hello to Mr. Alexander Kaylee. Good morning, A.K. Happy Sunday.

0:56.0

Thank you. Hello, Mike, my best friend. Yeah, and I'm feeling pretty positive. Listen, I know the we're going to talk about this for sure. I think it's going to pop up in the comments a lot. It certainly did even before yesterday's show.

1:09.0

Our previous show, a lot of comments about a certain individual who made their unexpected return over the weekend.

1:15.0

Some people might not be feeling super positive about where said person has been positioned in the well-to-weight telepicture following last night's main event.

1:25.0

Some people would be super positive about it though. I will say there's a lot of supporters of this man out there.

1:30.0

I may be speaking for myself and some members of the media and some critics, but a common man. A lot of the common man seems to enjoy the work of one Mr. Kayos Colby Coveington, Colby Chaos Coveington and whatever you want to call him.

1:44.0

Who am I to judge? Who am I to judge and say that that's a negative? That might have been the cherry on top of what was a pretty good pay-per-view.

1:54.0

Not top to bottom, not a pay-per-view that we're going to remember probably as one of the best events of the year, but some compelling storylines and some good results for a lot of veterans who I think myself and several others might have been counting out.

2:09.0

Yes, and the Colby thing has been incredible in terms of reaction. It's been the biggest story since Friday, Colby just being in London and getting the shot.

2:19.0

People are asking him in the hotel lobby. You're darn right, I'm in the hotel lobby because that's where all the action is. You never know what's going to happen on this live show.

2:26.0

So here's how this is going to work. We'll talk about each of these fights. If you have matchmaking suggestions for the fighter that we are discussing, throw them in the chat. We'll pull them up on the screen and at the end we'll take like 10, 15 minutes. We'll just run the gauntlet of all of your different matchmaking suggestions, mostly in terms of fights we have not discussed.

2:47.0

So you mentioned the AK Colby Covington announced by Dana White as the next in line for welterweight champion Leon Edwards defeats Kamar Usman.

2:58.0

A lot of scorecard discussion when it comes to this, but I think the judges, I think there's only two ways you could score this fight.

3:05.0

You could score it a draw, 47-47. I don't think you could score this fight for Kamar Usman. I just don't see it. If you want to make the case, sure.

3:14.0

But to be, I scored it four rounds to one for Leon. I thought he lost the second round. I thought he won one, three, four, and five. Obviously lost the point in the third. So 48-46, I scored it. If you scored it three rounds to two for Leon in a draw, I got no issue with that card.

3:30.0

I didn't really see it for Usman. I just think Leon did a lot more in terms of damage, and Usman was pushing forward. Usman was going for takedowns, but even when he got him, he couldn't hold Leon down and do a lot of damage with them.

3:41.0

So it looks like we're getting Leon Edwards versus Colby Covington. Do you think that's this is the fight that is actually going to happen, especially with Mosadal and Burns about the fight?

3:50.0

Because you know, Jorge wins that fight. I just don't see how that is not an option at this point, especially to make this announcement around three weeks before this fight is even going to happen.

4:01.0

But Dana, the UFC seems steadfast. It's going to be Colby. Do you think when Leon steps foot in that octagon again, he will fight Colby Covington?
