Summary

We start today’s episode of On The Continent with a deserved tribute to one of French football’s favourite sons, as former Marseille president Pape Diouf sadly passed away this week. We remember his incredible journey from humble beginnings in Chad to establishing himself as a respected football journalist and eventual club president, all while endearing himself to the French football public.

Elsewhere, as clubs around Europe struggle with the financial fallout from the Coronavirus pandemic, we discuss whether the decision should rest on the players to donate some of their wages to non-playing staff or if that should be up to clubs and the authorities. There’s also time for a lowdown of the increasingly tense relationship between Lionel Messi and the Barcelona hierarchy, as well as some powerful statements from Atalanta supporters’ groups.

And finally – roll up, roll up, it’s time for the clash of the century. It’s the F1 car vs the go-kart; it’s beautiful goals vs beautiful features; yes, we make time to discuss the Karim Benzema vs Olivier Giroud beef!

Andy how the devil are you chap? I know you've been a bit under the weather so I thought

better? Yeah, yeah. Onwards and upwards, Lukey. Of course I was revitalised by the company

0:33.2

of the renewed Jules Breach on Tuesday on Football Ram with Daily which definitely helped but

0:38.9

plenty of interesting stuff to chew through today. Absolutely. We shouldn't really be talking

0:43.9

about things being infectious but the only thing more infectious than coronavirus is the

0:48.4

Jules Breach in the Theosiasm which we welcome. It's good to see her back on her feet as

well and pleased to hear you're feeling a bit better too. You sound a lot better so good

stuff. Alright, unfortunately we have to start with some sad news this week. Former Marse

president Papa D'Euth has sadly passed away from coronavirus. I mean it was only a week

1:12.0

or two ago. We were talking about ex-real Madrid president Lorenzo Sands sadly suffering

1:17.0

the same fate. But plenty of our listeners and I include myself in this. Wouldn't have been

1:22.5

overly familiar with the Papa D'Euth story. He was listed in the obituaries as ex-Marse

1:30.4

president. But the story he had to come from where he came from to reach where he eventually

1:36.4

reached was actually quite a remarkable one. I wonder if you can give us a quick potted

1:41.3

history of his life and what he was able to achieve and how he did it. Yeah, well he's

1:46.8

a born in Chad to a Senegalese family and grew up in Senegal, came over to France as

1:55.1

a teenager which was always the plan because his dad was very French loyalist. And what

2:05.4

he didn't imagine I think is that his son who studied political science at Aixon Provence

would go on afterwards to become a journalist when he was at the university Aixon Provence.
