Chapter 28 is the chapter in which Jane's vulnerability becomes undeniable to us.

Jane doesn't have a reference or enough money in her pockets, so of course she finds

herself homeless and starving within five days of being out of Thornfield.

She wanders in the moors, she asks for work and begs for food.

She goes to a church to ask for help, but the minister is out of town, and so she is turned

away.

Religion is useless to her.

She is some faith in nature, but even that turns on her.

At first the Heather is a welcome bed, but she ends up under a rock in the rain.

After days and days of having no shelter and hardly any food, she is on the brink of

death.

She is dragging herself across the moors in the midst of a storm when she sees the light

of a house.

In desperation, she goes there.
