It’s June 6th. This day in 1994 (June 4th, in fact) disgraced former National Security Council advisor Oliver North wins the GOP primary for the Virginia Senate race. He would go on to lose in an extremely close election.

Jody, Niki, and Kellie discuss North’s second act, how the 1994 campaign was an extremely modern and ugly affair, and how there are indeed second acts in American life.

0:09.0	This day, June 6, 1994, actually it was June 4th, 1994, but Oliver L North won the primary
0:19.2	to become Virginia's Republican nominee for U.S. Senate.
0:23.2	Oliver North is most known, rightly so, for his role in the Iran-Contra scandal,
0:28.0	where as a member of President Reagan's National Security Council,
0:31.6	he cooked up the scheme to divert funds from the
0:34.1	sales of arms in Iran to fund the Contra rebels in Nicaragua. He also had his
0:38.9	fingers and lots of other sketchy pies in the late 80s to put it mildly. You know that scheme we've done
0:44.8	we've done episodes on Iran Contra before but that scheme was exposed in late
0:48.0	86 in summer 87 North was part of the very high profile hearings around the Iran country. He was granted immunity, but he was also indicted like 16 times, faced a trial. Anyway, it was a whole thing in the late 80s, very high profile,
1:02.6	and for most Americans that may have been the last time
1:05.2	they saw or heard of Oliver North
1:07.7	until this moment, eight years later,
1:10.0	when North is back on the scene,
1:11.7	one election away from becoming a US senator.
1:16.1	Let's call this another piece of evidence that completely refutes F Scott Fitzgerald's quote
1:20.8	that there are no second acts in American lives.
1:24.0	For my money, that is like the least accurate famous quote in history.
1:28.3	There are definitely second acts and third acts and fourth acts and more
1:31.8	in American lives.
