Last spring, I wrote a letter to Kelly Wilson's mom, Kathy.

The 30th anniversary of Kelly's disappearance from Gilmer, Texas, had just passed that January.

I introduced myself and asked if we could meet.

A few weeks later, my phone rang.

An anonymous call.

When I picked up, I instantly recognized Kathy's voice.

She has a southern accent.

It's kind of twangy.

She was polite, but she didn't have much to say.

To my disappointment, Kathy declined to meet for an interview.

She said she had good reason not to talk.

There were new developments in the search for her daughter, Kelly.

Kathy didn't want to do anything to compromise the case.

I had also written a letter to Kelly's dad, Robbie. Unlike his ex-wife, Robbie was happy to meet.
