Summary

Hello and welcome back to Equity, a podcast about the business of startups, where we unpack the numbers and nuance behind the headlines. This is our Wednesday show, where we niche down to a single topic, think about a question and unpack the rest. This week, Natasha and Alex asked: How do founders hold two ideas in their heads: both that there is an economic downturn, but also that things are looking up for many industries? After a series of episodes about the tensions within the downturn, this is a "good news, despite" episode. We started with a vibe check based on recent interviews with recently venture-backed founders, before getting into the bright spots from Q2 2022 data.  Then we spent some time talking about specific sectors enjoying fresh cash right now, including climate and European edtech. Geographically, Africa continues to be one to watch. The continent is set to have its best year yet. In the second half of the show, lean back and enjoy the riffing: we talk VC vacation homes, good news, and somehow end with tater tots. We had a great time, and hope you like this show. We’re back Friday with our regular news roundup! Equity drops every Monday at 7 a.m. PDT and Wednesday and Friday at 6 a.m. PDT, so subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts,Overcast, Spotify and all the casts. Today we're asking, how do founders hold two ideas in their heads?

0:28.6

Both that there is an economic downturn, but also that things are looking up for many industries.

0:33.0

To talk about this dissonance, as always, I have the Brill Alex Wilhelm hair with me.

0:37.0

Alex, how's it going?

0:39.0

Going good.

0:40.0

I'm just a little bit concerned that by calling me, quote,

0:42.6

Brill, presenting expectations, a little higher?

0:46.0

Not high enough, if you ask me.

0:48.0

You've been on it on all fronts.

0:49.7

And I very much appreciate you being on

to do crazy episodes like this all the time.

0:54.4

Well I think this is the perfect episode for us to kind of sit and have a chat because I was just

0:58.4

re-reading your last newsletter which seems to be kind of like the root of what we're going to talk about today and I thought it was a really

1:04.2

good encapsulation of the same struggle that I'm having which is what is going on?

1:08.9

Oh my god and we will get to it but I notice even in your language in writing about climate investment, you talked about just so many

different data sources because it was like we can't assume one source is the truth these days,

1:21.3

there is so much dissonance. But yeah, like let's start with a little bit of my

newsletter because it was really inspired by this idea that we're like getting a lot of
