Summary

Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means preview Saturday's Ohio State-Tulsa game on the latest Buckeye Talk, but they keep it a little fast and loose because the Buckeyes are favoried by more than three touchdowns. Among the topics of discussion: Ohio State's logistical issues at the stadium last week, and whether that might help tamp down attendance this week. The Tulsa defensive approach and how the Buckeyes will attack it. Picks for the game, plus picks on Cincinnati-Indiana and Penn State-Auburn. Hey, hey, where you been, but I talk is about to begin, hey, hey, hey, come on in.

0:26.7

The glimmery snake the bear Stephen meets here for your buck. I talk preview of Ohio State and Tulsa, and I want to address right off the top one of the gravest mistakes of my career, and it's something that we're all paying for right now, and it is my declaration to know things about the other team, because I just did a half hour rewatch of Tulsa Oklahoma State. It is on YouTube. Don't watch it. It is bad football, and I just off the top

0:56.7

would like to tell everybody, if you look at the Tulsa Oklahoma State store Oklahoma State beat Tulsa 28 23 last week, if you look at that score and take yourself, ooh Tulsa, hung with Oklahoma State, my oh my should know Oklahoma State, whatever Oklahoma States win total is for this year, take the under. That was awful football. Nathan, you're shaking your head at me. Did you watch that monstrosity as well? No offense to Tulsa, I watched a few

1:26.7

clips and no, I mean, it's, there's a lot you can just look at that. I mean, the fact that they lost to UC Davis, like what could they possibly the fact that it was a close game in the second week told me more about actually UC Davis, I think is decent FCS in some ways, but it told me more about Oklahoma State than did about Tulsa.

1:44.2

That game was seven seven and a half time. Tulsa was had 14 seven and the second half Tulsa Tulsa drove down and Oklahoma State tied at 14 Tulsa drives down has to settle for a field goal in the red zone. They go up 17 14 and they give up a kick return for the touchdown on the play after they take the lead 17 14. So that's when Oklahoma State takes his first lead at 21 17 and Oklahoma State wins.

2:08.2

So I guess I was going to talk about the other team. So here's a thing a couple of things that gleaned from the Tulsa game defensively, we did we did a video for outrageous predictions where all of us unbeknownst to the other two predicted that Ohio State, this is Buckeye talk by the way, did I say that predict.

2:30.0

He's a police. I'm Nathan Baird. He's Steven Means.

2:33.5

The 10 podcasts a week. I can't I keep I forget which one I'm on sometimes the thing some cue cards. The thing for the thing is that the other.

2:45.8

Seriously, what was I talking about? I swear to God, now seriously, what was I talking about. I'm talking about defense. The video is defense. We did an outrageous video where we all picked like Ohio State to run wild on Tulsa because when Ohio State has a bad game, they often circle the wagons that go back to the run game.

3:02.4

Tulsa plays a 3 3 5 which means they have five defensive backs on the field all the time. On fourth down, they have a stand up rush and so they'll have four guys in the line of scrimmage.

3:12.6

The result of the 3 3 5 is that depending what the offense does, they'll have three safeties lined up deep. Sometimes, sometimes they'll bring guys up and you wind up with sort of only one deep safety, but it's definitely a 3 3 5. Still, they like to have sometimes guys in the box. A lot, but it's, you know, it's not a four defensive line.

3:32.2

So there's like, you know, they got to fill gaps and whatever, but they try to stop the run with that 3 3 5. So it's kind of a weird thing of like they're sort of geared up. They'll bunch a bunch of bunch of a got several guys up behind those three defensive linemen and try to fill gaps and sort of stop the run. And then they play a lot of off covered. There's a lot of room underneath not and Oklahoma State threw a lot of bubbles last week, not necessarily just underneath for bubbles, but just like for those nice 10 to 12 yard out routes and stuff like that.

4:01.8

That we see with Ohio State. So their personnel is to stop the pass, but then they kind of dedicate themselves to the run.

4:09.9

Steven, we know Ohio State does want to run it. That's what they want to do, but it does make me curious against that 3 3 5.

4:19.0

They probably have an opportunity to bowl some guys over, but if there's some people in the box, I also think they have a chance to get the past game going because I think Tulsa is going to be afraid of.

4:27.7

Tulsa acted like they were afraid of Oklahoma State's passing gate, and this was not Brandon Weeden James Washington. I'm trying to think who the other good Oklahoma State receivers that have been there through the years.

4:38.0

They usually have a good receiver. Didn't feel like Oklahoma had anybody that was really Oklahoma State had anybody really scary and Tulsa was still kind of scared of their past game.

4:45.5

So I don't know, Steven, we make our predictions based on what Ohio State wants to do because Ohio State usually does what it wants to do.

4:51.4

But I'm curious to see how the book is actually wind up attacking this 3 3 5.

4:55.6

Well, I will say has a chance to get back to what it does best on offense, and that's pounded up the middle pounded up the middle couple of outside your zone runs deep shot for the yards down the field.

5:05.2

Because when you're playing at 3 3 5, sometimes you can let your offensive line make it to that second level a little quicker and also let your running backs run wild a little bit.

5:12.8

And then those defensive backs, you all five of them might start keeping up and then all of a sudden, Gary Wilson, Jackson Smith, the Jake were crystal lava is open deep.
