Hi everyone. It's Dylan. Today we are going to do something a little different. You are

0:08.4

going to get to meet two members of the Atlas Obscura team who are a little bit behind

0:14.5

the scenes. They have a job that's actually very close to my heart. Well, I don't want

0:20.4

to say too much. I don't want to give it all away. So to start, I'm just going to ask

0:23.6

you actually to introduce yourselves. What are your names and what do you do at Atlas Obscura?

0:32.2

So my name is Jonathan Carey and I'm the senior associate editor for the Places team here at Atlas

0:37.1

Obscura. And basically I edit, publish, review all new entries submitted through our community,

0:42.9

through various other channels. So I'm one of the stewards of the Atlas of new places to the Atlas.

0:49.1

And I am Michelle Cassidy and I also do that. At the heart of Atlas Obscura is this database of

0:57.6

20,000 plus places. And from day one, it back starting in 2009, basically the way it works is

1:05.4

people can submit places anywhere in the world. And then on our side, we actually look at all of

1:10.0

these things that people send in and say, oh, that one is a good one or that one is like that doesn't

1:16.9

make sense at all. And so we Jonathan, Michelle, that's what they do. They get to see all of the

1:22.9

weird, interesting, amazing places that people send into Atlas Obscura every day. So you both have

1:29.0

been doing this job for a while now. You've seen a lot of places come through the Atlas. I wanted

1:37.5

to ask you both, Michelle, I'll ask you first, was there an entry early on that you were like,

1:43.1

this is crazy. Like this is an amazing place. Was there something that like really caught your

1:47.0

attention when you started doing this work? There was. And you know, it's it's funny because

1:53.1

it is one that on the surface is not one that I think seems particularly crazy or out there.

2:00.9

But as I kept learning about it, it fascinated me. And it's the sattiest cashewsco

2:08.8

national memorial in Philadelphia. Okay. So it's like a statue? So it is a small brick

2:17.4

row house in the Society Hill neighborhood. It doesn't look terribly exciting from the outside.
