And I have to tell you, as soon as I mentioned the subject to Jamie Rednapp, our guest this week, he winced and understandably it's injuries and it's not because it brings back painful memories but it's just a painful part of the game, isn't it Jamie? It's a painful part of the game. It's something that I certainly had to deal with. It's never easy because I was pretty good as a young

part. I didn't have that many injuries but when I look back through my career

maybe that was one of the reasons why I suffered with knee problems later on in life

because I end up having sort of 12-13 knee operations and bone on bone meniscus

taken out and sometimes you look back I think maybe things have been done slightly

differently and if I played now with the way technology is gone, I'd have probably been still playing because they'd have managed the injuries differently. Also, the flip side of that, do you look back and think, actually, it could have been an awful lot worse. A lot of players who don't have anything like the career you had due to injuries. Yeah, exactly. I mean, I have to be honest, Jeff, 27, 28 was when I had a surgery at Liverpool. I was bone-on-bone in my knee, so I went to America. I'd had surgery in Sheffield that didn't work. I ended up going to America to see Dr. Sledman, who was the number one knee surgeon at a time, an amazing guy. And he gave me a couple of years, maybe two, three years extra in my career, but I couldn't really play to the level I wanted. It was difficult playing against players that you felt weren't as good as you and all of a sudden they were running past you. I had to, I could only start to train on the Thursday because you're managing the injury to just make sure you can get through games. And it was really tough and then people then people question you as a you know he's

always injured and that's the hardest bit because they question that's questioning your integrity and

especially with someone at love football like i did it was so difficult to take at times because you

get like you know injury prone and you know and obviously on league at the road i get a lot of stick for it

but there are sometimes and i look back and think you know i had two had two broken ankles, load of knee operations. I was very, very unfortunate.

Knowing you, as well as I do, even when I raised the subject just then, I see your shoulders

sag. To this day, it still wrinkles with you, doesn't it, the fact that you had those injuries

and the games you missed? is it as you say the

fact people questioning your integrity if you like let's be honest your toughness in those days
