Summary
Is it possible to be so close to the Bible that you actually miss the heart of Jesus?
In this episode of Off Script, Neil sits down with Lydia Florence and Connor Hall to discuss a sermon on the healing of the blind man. Connor shares his "method" approach to sermon prep, practicing in total darkness, and dives into the research he did on different types of blindness. The team examines "Cracker Barrel Christianity," the danger of spiritual pride among those who study Scripture deeply, and why we often try to make Jesus more like us instead of becoming more like Him.
The Challenge
Identify one "southern saying" or cultural idea about God you've relied on more than actual Scripture.
Hosts: Neil Gregory, Connor Hall, and Lydia Florence.
What We Discuss
- Connor's "method" sermon prep: practicing in the dark to better understand the blind man's perspective.
- The decision to preach without notes, images, or props to keep the focus entirely on the Word.
- Why a full page of "marshmallow fluff" was cut from the final sermon.
- Fascinating research on blindness, including how those born blind dream differently than those who lost their sight.
- "Cracker Barrel Christianity": Why southern sayings like "God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers" aren't actually in the Bible.
- The "Bless This Mess" mentality, why we want Jesus to bless our chaos rather than transform it.
- The danger of spiritual elitism and "holy huddles" where we study the Bible but never reach the lost.
- Why teachers will be judged more strictly and the weight of living out what you preach.
- Addressing the tendency to try to make Jesus "cool" or popular so that we can feel accepted by culture.
- The truth about the Christian life: it will rarely be easy, but it will always be worth it.
About Southland Christian Church
Southland is one church meeting in multiple locations across central Kentucky. We believe Jesus came for the lost and the broken, which means there's a place for everyone here. Around here, that means we worship defiantly, speak truth unashamedly, and extend grace generously.

| 0:00.0 | Well, hey everyone and welcome to the podcast. |
| 0:02.9 | We are so glad you're here with us today. My name is Neil. And today we got Lydia Florence and Connor Hall, the man who hates country music. Okay. That is not a hater. He took him to task. He just has better theology than most country musicians. That's fair. So as you were talking... Which isn't hard. |
| 0:21.1 | As it turns out. |
| 0:21.9 | As you were talking during your sermon, I just quick Googled like just country songs and some names. Then I was like, oh, that's a cool one. There's one called In the Bible. And then you look at the lyrics and you're like, that's terrible. You're like, that's not in the Bible. That's not in the Bible. You want to call one out specifically? |
| 0:36.3 | The one that always comes to mind is the Luke Bryan song. |
| 0:38.6 | It's like, I believe most people are good. |
| 0:40.4 | Not biblical. Bible. That's not in the Bible. You want to call one out specifically? The one that always comes to mind is the Luke Bryan song. |
| 0:38.6 | It's like, I believe most people are good. |
| 0:40.5 | Not biblical. |
| 0:42.4 | Seriously. |
| 0:42.9 | People are not good at their core. |
| 0:44.9 | Oh my gosh. |
| 0:45.8 | Maybe they might be blind to biblical scripture. |
| 0:48.8 | You know, we might cover that. |
| 0:51.2 | We might cover that today's podcast. |
| 0:53.1 | I don't know. |
| 0:53.5 | So I just got done teaching twice. Yep. Yeah. You know, you and I talked a little bit this week about even prior to you going on stage and teaching. It's just like, hey, what may be some things we can talk about in here? And then you sent me an email with some things that I am very curious about. I think that people would |
| 1:10.9 | want to know. I didn't give you any context too for anyone. No, I was like, okay, I want to start with the one that kind of struck me as the oddest. Uh, you practice this sermon in the dark with no windows. What does that mean? Yeah, so, uh, it wasn't entirely with no light because I mean, I would look at either like my manuscript with the light or my phone or whatever. But what I was trying to do was just get super method with it. But I was trying to kind of get in the blind man's position a little bit. And, you know, all he saw was darkness until that moment. That actually makes more sense. Okay. There also, after I would finish, there was also a moment where either I'd turn on the light or I'd open the door and just when you've been in darkness for several hours, the light really hits you completely different. So I can't imagine when he felt, I was just trying to do something weird to kind of try to at least put myself in his shoes a little bit. So that's where that came from. Okay. I just stuck with it |
| 2:01.8 | throughout. How does it feel to memorize 30 plus minutes of content? It feels weird. I, uh, so for, |
| 2:09.2 | for years when I was at the church plant in Tennessee, we were talking about this. We, uh, we actually |
| 2:14.9 | preached in the round. We were in a space. We were in a CrossFit gym where he had to set up chairs. CrossFit Gym. Throw back to last week, Lydia. That's right. Yeah, I don't know if we're looking for sponsorship. Were you a crossfitter? Because you're talking about it right now. No, I'm not. I'm not. But so, I'd preach in the round, and it was super weird if you did use notes. So by the time I moved up here, Wiese was like, hey, I know you can, I know you can memorize. Because he always memorized. |
| 2:37.9 | That was his thing. And it was super weird if you did use notes. So by the time I moved up here, we just was like, hey, I know you can, I know you can |
