Summary

Is it possible that our greatest barrier to understanding Jesus is actually our own "religious" expectations? This week, we explore why Jesus is the only one who can truly introduce us to the Father.

In this episode of Off Script, Neil and Scott dive into the profound prologue of the Gospel of John. Scott explains the "why" behind choosing this heavy theological text and discusses the concept of Jesus as the Logos. They tackle the tension between law and grace, the difference between "getting" the Bible and actually knowing God, and why seeing Jesus is the only way we can truly understand the character of a Father we've never seen.

The Reset Challenge

Commit to changing your algorithm. Replace your usual political or cultural podcasts with faithful Bible teaching from trusted sources, spend time reading the Book of John, and set a scripture wallpaper on your phone to remind you whose voice matters most.

Hosts: Neil Gregory and Scott Nickell

What We Discuss

  • The intentionality behind preaching the prologue of John and its "Mount Everest" theological status.
  • Understanding the Logos
  • Why "Grace upon Grace" isn't just a catchy phrase, but a description of God's literal, overflowing kindness.
  • The tension between the Law given through Moses and the Grace and Truth that came through Jesus.
  • The danger of knowing the "Book" (The Bible) without actually knowing the "Word" (Jesus).
  • How Jesus "tabernacled" or pitched His tent among us to move into our neighborhood.
  • The power of the "One More" mission as Southland celebrates baptisms across multiple campuses.

About Southland Christian Church

Southland is one church meeting in multiple locations across central Kentucky. We believe Jesus came for the lost and the broken, which means there's a place for everyone here. Around here, that means we worship defiantly, speak truth unashamedly, and extend grace generously.

Welcome to Offscript, a Southland Christian Church podcast. Each week, we sit down with our teacher to talk through what didn't make it into Sunday sermon. Thoughts, stories, or questions that got left off the manuscript, but still matter. Thanks for being with us. Let's jump in.

Well, hey, everyone, and welcome to the podcast today. My name's Neil. As always, Mr. Nickel, how are you?

0:23.4

It took me a second to remember the name. I was like, I can't remember it. I remember what it's not. I'm trying to avoid just using the name at all. I'm not getting married to the name. You know, I'm just... Yeah, who knows. Who knows what's going to happen at this point. We'll see. week

0:35.4

week one of grace

0:36.5

still talking

0:37.5

about Jesus

0:38.0

though

0:38.4

obviously

0:39.4

came up with this point we'll see week uh week one of grace still talking about jesus though

0:38.4

obviously um came up with an interesting idea to talk about the prologue of of john what where

0:46.6

why did that come to your head as you were thinking through yeah it's interesting back when i was

0:50.6

i don't remember what time of year it was when i was mapping out, like our, everything we were going to preach through this year. And then it kind of hit me. I was throwing these words out. Like, I want to make sure the first several weeks are on Jesus. Then I want to hit grace. Then I want to hit truth. Then I want to hit freedom. And then I realized like, man, if we just journey through John for the first several weeks, we can keep journeying through John when we get to grace and we get to truth and we get salvation is leading right up to Easter, then Easter, and then we're going to be in something new. But I just realized, like, I can do that and it'll be fun. It's my favorite gospel for sure, probably first or second favorite book of the Bible.

1:31.1

And so, but the trick with the gospel of John is you have the prologue at the beginning,

1:36.3

and it's a totally different perspective on basically the birth of Jesus, the nativity scene, so to speak.

1:43.5

Like he doesn't do what the other

1:45.0

three do and talk about shepherds and talk about Mary and Joseph. He gives us some more

1:49.3

cosmic and philosophical and theological perspective on it that echoes back to Genesis 1,

1:55.5

which is really intriguing, but it can get really technical. So I actually did cut this out of

2:00.3

the sermon. Last week when I went and opened up, like, I have a stage in my sermon prep where I start pulling books off the shelf and looking at commentators and things like that. And for the Gospel of John, I have some favorite commentators and authors. I had them all, because we've been journeying through the Gospel John. I had them all out. They've been on my desk for weeks now. I didn't like what really any of them had to say.

2:21.8

It was really weird. Yeah. And it was because what they were doing, it wasn't wrong, but it wasn't

2:27.1

going to serve our purposes really well because basically they were taking this beautiful

2:31.6

prologue and chopping it up and dissecting it, which is fine.
