Summary

Laphonza Butler is well known in Democratic circles. Her resume includes roles as a regent on the board of the University of California, president of the California SEIU, and most recently the third president of EMILY’s List. But with her appointment to the late Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat this afternoon, her profile is about to get far more public. It also means she has mere weeks to decide if she will run to be elected to the seat she is assuming. California Bureau Chief Christopher Cadelago tells Playbook co-author Eugene Daniels that it's a decision that could throw an already complicated race into a tailspin. Hey, good morning. I'm Playbook co-author Eugene Daniels. It's Tuesday, October 3rd. Here's what's

0:10.7

driving the day. We all knew what's going to happen, but it was still a shock when it did.

0:15.6

Matt Gates filed the motion to vacate the speakership against Kevin McCarthy, something that he had been

0:22.2

threatening to do and hinting at for weeks and weeks and weeks, and it has now officially

0:27.1

happened. This is the first time in decades that the Congress has had to deal with this.

0:35.2

It is going to be one of those huge historic moments as this kind of

0:38.3

figures itself out and things shake out.

0:41.6

McCarthy has about 48 hours to kind of figure out how to deal with it.

His allies tell us they expect him to table and basically try to effectively kill the motion.

0:52.4

But Gates, on the steps of the Capitol after he made his announcement,

0:56.5

1:03.8

and save McCarthy. Now, for their part, Democrats have been pretty quiet, saying not much

about what they're working on, how they're

1:12.3

working on it. Currently, they are waiting for a signal from minority leader Hakeem Jeffries and his

1:17.4

leadership team on how to handle it. Jeffries and his ally spent much of last night huddling

1:23.1

with leaders of caucuses, hearing out senior Democrats on what they want to happen. There was a late

1:27.9

night meeting with Jeffries to kind of discuss some of this. There's also a meeting this morning

1:32.4

at 9 a.m. in the Democratic caucus meeting. That hurdle is expected to be so closely held. Members

1:38.9

won't be allowed to take their phones in. This is per notice that went out last night. They're really

1:43.6

trying to keep it secret,

1:45.1

at least keep it secret, as long as they possibly can. There are some Democrats who want to cut a deal

1:50.2

with McCarthy, basically make him work for it and figure out a way to get him to save him here.
