Summary

The House is still without a Speaker after Rep. Jim Jordan once again failed to receive the 217 votes necessary to secure the gavel.Rather than continuing with a second vote after the Ohio Republican’s first failed ballot on Tuesday, Jordan used the time to attempt to flip more members of his own party to yes votes. Instead, he received an additional two ‘nos’ bringing the total on Wednesday to 22. The plan for Jordan—and the entire speaker-less House going forward— is unclear, Huddle author Daniella Diaz tells Playbook Deputy Editor Zack Stanton. Plus, protestors calling for a ceasefire in Gaza sat in the Capitol as President Biden was en route back from Israel, and the different ways Democrats have chosen to address (or not address) the crisis is deepening some existing fissures within the party. Playbook Deputy Editor Zack Stanton interviews Huddle author Daniella Diaz.

Good morning, Playbookers. I'm Deputy Editor Zach Stanton. It is Thursday, October 19th,

and that means it's day three of Jim Jordan's quest to become speaker, day 16 of the House

0:18.3

not having a speaker, and just 29 days until a government shutdown.

We'll have more on the speaker vote in a second.

But first, President Joe Biden is back today from the Middle East, and he returns to a

0:30.7

Washington where his steadfast support of Israel and Israel's response to Hamas' terrorist attacks

0:37.2

is emerging as a dividing line

0:39.9

in the Democratic Party's left flank. Yesterday, demonstrators advocating for a ceasefire descended

0:46.1

on Capitol Hill, sitting in at the Cannon House Office building, and staging a protest on

0:51.2

the lawn of the Capitol. Now, at that demonstration, Congresswoman

0:55.5

Rashida Taleb, who is a Democrat from Michigan, and the only Palestinian-American member of

1:01.0

Congress and one of two Muslim women in the House, repeated a claim that Israel bombed a hospital

1:07.7

in Gaza. Now, by all appearances, that claim seems to be false.

1:13.6

President Joe Biden has disputed it. He cited U.S. intelligence in blaming a misfired rocket

1:19.0

by Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad for that catastrophe. And yesterday, the Senate

1:24.7

Intelligence Committee's top Democrat and top Republican, that being

1:28.3

Senators Mark Warner and Marco Rubio, respectively, released a statement saying that their own

1:33.8

review of the intelligence gives them the confidence that, and I quote, the explosion was the

1:38.6

result of a failed rocket launch by militant terrorists, and not the result of an Israeli airstrike."

1:45.1

And yet, even after all of that, Taleb repeated the debunked claim and tearfully

1:50.6

vowed to demonstrators that she will not forget what President Biden has done on this issue.
