Summary

We definitely have Georgia on our minds here at Playbook. The Senate race in the Peach State — pitting Sen. Raphael Warnock against football legend Herschel Walker — is likely the most consequential Senate race on the map this year. Early voting begins today. There’s nothing better as a reporter than getting out of the swamp to see what voters are thinking and saying for yourself — so Playbook's Eugene Daniels headed to Atlanta for a check-in. In a special dispatch after his trip, Eugene chats with Playbook Deputy Editor Zack Stanton about what he found. There's a sense that the scandal-ridden Walker is sucking up all the political oxygen in the state. Even Warnock campaign aides admit surprise when reporters call to talk about the sitting senator and not about Walker’s travails. In a story out this morning, Eugene explores how Warnock is a man in two worlds. At Ebenezer, no one calls him “senator.” It’s “reverend,” and members of his flock will correct you immediately. But while he enjoys a deep connection with his congregation, some Black political strategists worry that Warnock has not yet secured the broad support he’ll need from Black voters to earn a full term. How's it going? I'm Playbook Deputy Editor Zach Stanton. Happy Monday.

0:05.7

We're trying something a little different today to preview the week. I am joined by Playbook co-author Eugene Daniels for today's Playbook Daily Briefing.

0:14.6

Eugene, welcome back to DC. You just visited Georgia, right?

0:19.4

I did. I was there for five days. And while you were

0:23.3

there, you were doing some reporting on the giant marquee Senate race that they have, the

0:29.4

Senator Raphael Warnock, against Herschel Walker. One thing that in the process of your

0:35.2

reporting that I thought was kind of interesting, a little

0:37.8

behind the scenes peak here, is that you went to Ebenezer Baptist Church for Sunday services

0:44.3

to do some reporting, to talk to parishioners, and I think to soak in the whole scene.

0:49.8

And while you were there, the Reverend Warnock noticed you and was trying to sort of play the refs a little bit, knowing you were in town for some reporting.

0:59.3

Yes. Yeah, I did go to Ebenezer Baptist Church. One I wanted to go because I hadn't seen anyone do that yet, really.

1:06.7

Like anyone go to the church and kind of just get the scene of what it's like to watch this man who both a senator and a reverend. My grandfather was a Baptist preacher. Yes. And I, so I felt

1:17.5

very comfortable there, maybe too comfortable because I sit probably closer. I would sit closer

1:22.5

that most reporters probably would sit in doing one of the, you know, and kind of being in the scene

1:27.5

and kind of sneak into the church.

1:29.3

And so he, like, walks over to me

1:31.1

and he's talking about, it's voting, you know,

1:33.8

voting season is upon us.

1:35.8

We're in election season.

1:38.6

I know because these journalists,

1:40.3

they come to church on Sunday morning.

1:44.5

They sometimes try to sit over in the cut.
