Summary

In the future humanity will look to build new lives out among the stars, forging new worlds and megastructures for us to live on. But what about deep sea ecologies and aquatic life? What sort of habitats might we design for them? Hello, SFIA audio listeners. In this month's Nebula exclusive, big alien theory,

0:05.2

we're asking the reason alien civilizations might be rare is because most aliens are huge.

As we move into the future and expand off-planets, we tend to design our megastructures and habitats

0:28.0

to our own bipedal land-based desires. But what about our oceanic friends, like super smart

0:34.3

dolphins, or if we find marine life in the ocean moons of Jupiter, or if we

0:38.9

decide to re-engineer ourselves into more men and mermaids.

0:45.0

So one of our most talked about topics on this channel is the general concept that

0:49.1

humanity is likely to build giant space habitats as opposed to simply terraforming and colonizing other planets,

0:55.5

and today we will be discussing that notion in the context of building oceanic and aquatic habitats

1:01.1

in space. We will introduce some new megastructures, like a hydro shell, which allows truly

1:07.2

huge aquatic environments, dwarfing planets but avoiding crushing water pressures.

1:12.8

We will be looking at this in terms of a few options for gravity, microgravity, gravity

1:17.7

simulated by rotation, natural gravity, and artificial gravity. We will be looking at scales

1:23.5

from small habitats up to planet-sized ones, and even ones dwarfing planets in scope.

1:29.3

We will also be looking at purposes, whether it's a civilization that's aquatic in nature,

1:33.9

or it's more of a preserve, such as if we built large marine habitats as nature preserves,

1:39.3

rather than for us to live in, or for highly uplifted dolphins or whales to live in. We will also play with

1:45.5

some interesting features you might have in these, like vertical reefs or submarine islands inside

1:50.4

or under the water. Now to begin our discussion, there's two critical concepts we need to understand.
