The The In 1970 British director Ken Russell made a film called The Devils. A film based on a non-fiction book by Aldous Huxley documenting the rise and

fall of a Roman Catholic priest who was executed for witchcraft following the supposed possessions of sexually repressed

nuns in a village in France. When the film arrived in cinemas in 1971 it was met with shock and

disgust and criticism for its disturbingly violent sexual and religious

content. One seen in particular, a scene now simply

known as The Rape of Christ is still not included in any legal version of the film

that's available. The Devil's was banned in several

countries around the world and was heavily edited for release in others. The film

was publicly condemned by the Vatican, was given a zero star rating from Roger Ebert,

and was branded by film critic Judith Christ as a grand fiesta for sadists and perverts. He applies me with Carrese's lust for obscene.

However, nearly 50 years on, the film is now almost universally praised as a horror masterpiece and

despite the fact that the film still isn't available in its full uncut form

it remains one of the most shocking
