The During the 1960s America saw a rise in secularism and a decline in traditional

Christian faith. Sex, drugs and rock and roll were beginning to replace the

wholesome ideals of the previous decade.

And in 1966, a Time magazine cover simply asked in large red letters over a black background,

Is God Dead? a black background is God dead.

Over the next few years horror cinema did what it did best.

It started to reflect these tensions and anxieties and this growing rift between the old

guard and this new generation with new ideals.

A run of hugely successful and shocking movies would explore the idea of

Satanism and evil particularly corrupting the youth of the modern world.

God is dead!

Satan lives! The year is won! The first of these movies was in 1968. It was based on a hugely successful

IRA-11 novel from the previous year about a woman who is raped by the devil and gives birth to its child.

The film, produced by the King of B movies William Castle and directed by the upcoming very well respected at the time

European Art House Director Roman Polanski ended up becoming both a hugely

commercial hit and a critical darling and it even picked up an Oscar.

Over 50 years later, some of the stories of the real life horrors associated with some of the

cast and crew of this film are perhaps even more famous than the film

itself. But aside from all this, Rosemary's Baby remains one of the most important, culturally

relevant and terrifying movies ever made.
