Over a year ago, I made a promise to all of you.

A dumb promise.

A promise that had all the hallmarks of a terrible idea. I would read aloud to you a work of

classic literature and comment upon it as I go. The result? A winning podcast called Obscure. Season 1, Thomas Hardy's

Jude the Obscure, in which we followed the life of a stonemason to his death. We destroyed Jude the obscure. Well, fate destroyed Jude the

obscure, but we read it. That's what I'm saying. We just, we read it.

What I'm saying is we read it. This season, another book of classic literature,

one I had never read, but one which has seeped so deeply into the consciousness that everybody feels they already know the story when none of us actually do.

The story was published in 1818 by a teenager. It has the hallmarks of a spooky

y a novel or a DC comic. It is filled with horror beauty romance. It has monsters, human and otherwise. The book of course is Frankenstein. I am reading it this season on

obscure. I've never read it. I have no idea what it's like. I have an idea. So when I said I have no idea what it's like, that was wrong. I have an idea, but I suspect my ideas about it are all incorrect. The question is, how incorrect? The question is, will you join me on this journey? It's going to be a hell of a ride as we traverse history, Europe, literature, I'm going to make jokes, I'm going to do

voices. We're going to figure out the difference between Frankenstein and the

creature. We're going to have some laughs. Look, there might even be some kissing

scenes. I don't know. If there are, I'm going to linger on them because the difference between

beauty and horror is minimal.

We're gonna make the beauty, horrific,

and the horrific beautiful.

On this season of obscure Frankenstein.
