Athens where democracy was born and where I sat down with President Barack Obama, whose post-presidency is devoted to strengthening

the foundations of democracy now and in the future at home and abroad.

Obama previously came to Athens back in November 2016.

It was barely a week after Donald Trump won the election that would succeed him,

and he came to reassure the world that the system would prevail.

As long as we retain our faith in democracy,

as long as we retain our faith in the people, as long as we don't waver from those central

principles that ensure a lively, open debate, then our future will be okay because it remains the most effective form of government ever devised by man.

Now six years on there's compelling evidence that democracies are wavering.

The gap between rich and poor keeps widening, fueling economic anxiety.

Authoritarianism is on the rise.

Europe is at war, and the global rule of law is under threat.
