Grief seizes you when you read the names of children killed in a bomb shelter.

Yakov Bitten was only 16 years old.

His sister Abigail was 15, and his sister Sarah was only 13.

An Iranian ballistic missile collapsed their shelter in Bateshamesh,

the very place that was meant to keep them alive.

Now nothing makes that better.

These were real children, children with futures, parents, and names that will not soon

be forgotten.

Their grief is real, and outrage is appropriate.

Iran knowingly struck a civilian population center.

Whatever geopolitical or theological arguments are made,

the bitten children did not deserve to die beneath concrete in the middle of the night.

However, grief does not erase accountability. Before turning to theology, consider just the

raw numbers. Save the children reports at least 20,000 children killed in Gaza over 23 months, roughly one per hour.

UNICEF estimates 64,000 children killed or maimed by October 2025.

A February 2026, Lancet Population Study estimated 22,800 children

killed by direct violence through January 2025. And a peer-reviewed analysis found child mortality

increased by 34-fold over pre-war levels, with peak child death rates double

those of the Rwanda genocide. UNRWA reported that more children were killed in Gaza in four

months than in all global conflicts combined from 2019 to 2022.

Oxfam found more children died in the first year of the war

than in the entire period from 2005 to 2022.
