South Korean President Yun Sukyo says he will lift his martial law declaration after

Parliament unanimously voted to block it.

A cabinet meeting is expected within hours.

The latest in a dramatic turn of events during the early morning hours in South Korea.

The National Assembly building was surrounded by heavy security presence and a massive

crowd of protesters. NPR's Anthony Kuhn was there.

I got here with a crowd of people walking down the street past many police vehicles. It was pretty calm

and orderly, given the situation. By the time I got here, it had already been reported by

local media that lawmakers had convened inside the parliament and voted to overturn the martial

law order.

NPR's Anthony Kuhn. President Eun says he declared martial law because of threats posed by

rivals who sympathize with North Korea's communist government. But the opposition alleges

it was really about Eun attempting to push through his agenda. Well, in this exchange with a

reporter at the Pentagon, the spokesman, Major General Pat

Ryder, was asked about North Korea.

Have you seen any indications North Korea is poised or trying or willing to take advantage

of the situation?

Of course, we're closely monitoring the situation, but I'm not aware of any force posture changes.

Large numbers of North Korean forces have been deployed to assist Russia in its war against

Ukraine. In other news, President-elect Donald Trump won the popular vote in the 2024 election,
