Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Spear. The U.S. diplomat leading aid efforts in Gaza says there have been

improvements in the central and southern areas of the Palestinian territory.

Israel has been announcing four-hour pauses for several days to allow Palestinians to move

from the north were fighting as intense.

U.S. envoy David Satterfield says the level of assistance reaching Gaza has gone from zero a few weeks ago to about

a hundred trucks a day.

He says that is a bare minimum and he's trying to boost the flow of assistance, get more

potable water to Palestinians, and get fueled UN agencies.

And I'm speaking of the South and the Center, not of the North.

The North remains a kinetic area.

Satterfield says those who do move south must be able to return to the north when it is safe.

He says the U.S. does not want to see any quote enduring displacement of Palestinians even within Gaza.

He says the goal is a future without Hamas in charge and with no return to Israeli occupation.
