The U.S. is deploying an additional 900 troops to the Middle East region.

NPR's Quill Lawrence reports U.S. bases there have been attacked by drones and rockets.

Attacks against the U.S. around the region, including at a base in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, have injured at least 21 troops.

Pentagon spokesman General Patrick Ryder said troops are being sent to deter U.S. adversaries in the region not to fight in Israel.

But the United States is focused on helping Israel defend itself against terrorism.

And we're also focused on ensuring that this conflict is not widened so that more innocent people are killed.

We will continue to have those important conversations with our Israeli partners about proportionality and civilian safety.

Ryder also confirmed the U.S. is sending Israel missile interception systems. Quill Lawrence NPR News.
