President Biden is heading to Arizona for a historic visit to Indian country.

MPR's Manabistio is traveling with Biden and reports this is the first time he's

making such a visit as president.

While visiting the Hila River Indian community, Biden is expected to issue a formal

apology for the federal government's Native American boarding school program.

Between 1819 and 1969, the federal government operated more than 400 boarding schools across the country.

The goal was complete assimilation.

It is estimated that almost 1,000 students died, possibly more, and many more suffered physical abuse, neglect, and stripping of their

languages and culture.

This would be the first public apology issued by a U.S. President.

The visit to Heila River also comes less than two weeks before election day.

The reservation sits within Maricopa County, one of the counties that could determine

control of the White House.

Native voting advocates say tribal voters in Arizona could make a difference in this year's results.
