Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Israel carried out a series of airstrikes

today in Gaza, calling the move a response to attacks by Hamas. At least a dozen Palestinians and two

Israeli soldiers were killed in the fighting. NPR's Greg Myrie has more from Tel Aviv.

According to the Israeli military, Hamas fired at Israeli troops in southern Gaza, where the

troops were killed, as well as the northern part of the territory. Israel called it a blatant

violation of the ceasefire and responded with airstrikes in several locations across Gaza.

The Palestinians didn't say if they're dead were combatants or civilians.

Both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of breaking the truce since it came into effect

October 10th. However, these appeared to be the most serious clashes so far.

Israeli troops still control over half of Gaza's territory,

mostly in open areas outside cities and towns. Greg Myrie, NPR News, Tel Aviv. The No King's

rallies this weekend were held amid the government shutdown, which is now on its 19th day. Democrats

say President Trump should get involved to

bring it to an end. But NPR's Danielle Kurtzleben reports, Trump has so far remained on the

sidelines. Republicans and Democrats alike are dug in, and Trump doesn't seem himself to be in a

hurry to fix things. He's using the shutdown to pick winners and losers within the government. He has said he's trying to hurt what he calls

Democrat programs. And meanwhile, while some workers are starting to go unpaid, he says he's going

to make sure that some military, FBI, ICE, that they will get paid. Lawmakers remain at odds over health care tax credits.

The Senate has held numerous votes on a bill that would reopen the government, but Republicans

haven't been able to get enough Democratic votes to pass it.

Evacuation efforts are winding down in western Alaska, where the remnants of a powerful

typhoon destroyed remote villages last weekend. Alaska public media's Eric Stone reports
