Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Spear. As searches reach additional areas

the death hole from Hurricane Helene continues to rise, at least 175 people are now known dead after the storm roared ashore last week.

Lean wreaked havoc across half a dozen states or some of the worst damage in the Carolinas.

President Biden towards some of the hardest hit areas today saying

he's ordered up additional help from the Pentagon.

Today I'm also directing the Department of Defense to move up 1,000 soldiers to reinforce North Carolina's National Guard because they need additional

assistance.

These soldiers are out of Fort Liberty here and right here in North Carolina and are available

for responsive operations

starting today. That's on top of the 6,000 National Guard troops and thousands of

federal aid workers already on the ground. Vice President Kamla Harris

was in Georgia today.

Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walls faced off last night in the only vice presidential

debate scheduled in the election cycle.

Empress Domenica Montonaro says there was no clear winner, but there was one notable change.

The one thing that stood out was the version of J.D. Vance who showed up on stage.

Vance has been a hard-charging MAGA warrior who's made several missteps since being named Trump's running mate.

That persona was gone during the debate.
