On the first day of their targeted strike against the major automakers, members of the United

Auto Workers Union were rallying in Detroit today.

About 13,000 you ate up with you members began walking off the job at specific facilities

as the clock take down to a bendite contract deadline.

It marks the first time ever the union is striking the big three GM Ford and Stellanis

all at once.

Among those attending the rally, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who called on auto execs

to reach a deal.

It is time for you to treat your employees with the respect and dignity they deserve.

It is time to sit down and negotiate a fair contract.

Sanders pointed a growing wage inequality in the U.S. President Biden says his administration

is sending top aides to Detroit to try to mediate to the dispute, which is likely to have

widening economic effects the longer it goes.

How Speaker Kevin McCarthy is warning his party they could suffer a political blowback

if they allow the government to shut down next month, a bit of fight over government

spending.

NPR's Windsor Johnston reports Congress is up against a September 30 deadline to hammer

out a deal.

Speaker McCarthy says the House and Senate remain far apart on government spending.

Despite coming to an agreement with President Biden earlier this year on budget levels

for the next fiscal year.
