Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Hurst. Negotiators are meeting in

Cairo this weekend in hopes of ending the 11-month-old war in Gaza. The

U.S. and Israel sent delegations and Hamas

says it plans to have representatives there but won't be actively

participating in the talks. NPR's Carrie Khan has more.

Hamas says its delegation will be in Cairo at the invitation of both Egyptian and Katari mediators

to quote, listen to the results of the negotiations.

The militant group says it put forth and committed to a ceasefire

proposal in July, but Israel keeps making new demands.

Israel denies that.

Prime Minister Netanyahu says no troops will withdraw from what he says are vital military

positions, including a small corridor along the Gaza Egyptian border.

Saturday, the Gaza Health Ministry said its death toll rose to more than 40,300 killed.

That's since October 7th when Hamas militants attack southern Israel, killing about 1,200

people and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israel.
