Live from NPR News in Washington, on Kour Corva Coleman, forecasters have issued a tropical

storm warning for some of North Carolina's outer banks up to southern Virginia. Hurricane Aaron is

passing by. It won't make landfall, but its outer banks will sweep the Carolina coast. Forecasters

are warning of flooding and storm surge. Several states are under heat cautions today.

Extreme heat warnings are posted in western Mississippi as well as in the desert southwest.

It could hit 120 degrees in Death Valley, California today.

Dr. Ariel Cohen is with the National Weather Service.

He says people need to take this seriously.

Temperatures this warm will be capable of creating an environment where extreme heat-related

illnesses and even fatalities are a possibility.

The triple-digit temperatures will spread through parts of northwest Arizona and southern

and central Nevada today.

The Texas State House is set to hold a

preliminary vote as early as today on a new congressional map. The GOP plan aims to create new

districts that could send up to five more Republicans to the U.S. House. Houston Public Media's

Andrew Schneider reports the State House and Senate have different versions of the plan.

A Texas House committee rushed through its alternative map as one of the first orders of

business after Democrats returned on Monday and the chamber reestablished a quorum.
