Live from NPR News, I'm Janine Herbst. President Trump and Russian President Putin have just started a much-anticipated press conference after a two-and-a-half-hour summit between them, along with a handful of top aides, at a military base in Anchorage, Alaska, over Russia's war in Ukraine.

And Pierce Tamara Keith traveled with the president to Anchorage.

President Trump has been all over the place in terms of his expectations on the flight over.

He was asked, what would make the summit today a success? And he says, I can't tell you that.

I don't know. There's nothing set in stone. The president has lowered expectations saying that nothing really can get

done here without Ukraine. He says he's not here to negotiate a deal for Ukraine, but that he wants

to set the table for a future second meeting. And Pierce Hamer, Keith, reporting from Alaska.

In Texas, Republicans ended a special legislative

session without approving new congressional maps President Trump wants after some Democrats left the state

to avoid a quorum. But Republicans quickly began another session. Now, their maps shrink

Democratic-leaning districts, which could lead the GOP to pick up as many as five seats in the House.

Republicans say it reflects changing demographics, but critics call it gerrymanding that negatively affects minority communities.

House Speaker Dustin Bureau says the lawmakers who aren't there will not be subsidized by taxpayers.

Those costs will not be borne by the. Those costs will not be born by the Texas

taxpayers. They will be paid back by absent members as provided for in our House rules.

Meanwhile, the redistricting battle has become a national issue as California Democrats prepare to

offset Republican gains in Texas. Governor Gavin Newsom this week announced a special election in November to approve a redrawn district,

and Texas Democrats have indicated they would return to Austin only after California,

more formally, begins its process to counter Republicans.
