Live from NPR News in New York. I'm Jack Spear. A top Ukrainian

official says the country's military is pushing into Russia to create a buffer zone against ongoing attacks from the border region.

NPR's Greg Myri reports Ukrainian forces appear to be several miles inside Russia and

operating in multiple villages. A close advisor to President Valodermere

Zolinsky didn't provide details of the ongoing military operation, but he offered the rationale for the surprising attack inside

Russia. The official, Mikhailo Poldlak, says Russia has been launching assaults from the border

region without fear of retaliation.

We have to push them back in some areas if we want to make those areas safe for us, and we

are creating this buffer zone.

However, military analysts question whether Ukraine will be able to hold territory inside Russia.

Russia says it sent reinforcements to drive out the Ukrainians.

Vice President Kamala Harris and running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walls were in Detroit

today where they showed their support for organized labor.

Harris last night mentioned the support of the United Auto Workers Union,

and today the pair spoke to a small group of UAW members.

Harris and Walls are making joint campaign appearances in some of the most closely contested states

will likely decide the November election against Republican Donald Trump and his running mate Ohio senator J.D. Vance.
