Live from NPR News in New York, I'm Jack Spear. A federal judge has ruled against Google in a major antitrust lawsuit.

The judge saying Google acted illegally to maintain its monopoly on the online search market.

NPR's Derek Kerr has more on the ruling.

The Department of Justice sued Google in 2020.

The case went to trial last fall, making it the government's first major monopoly case to make it to trial in decades,

and the first in the age of the modern internet.

During the trial, the Justice Department showed that Google had paid device makers,

such as Apple and Samsung, billions of dollars to make Google search,

the default search engine on smartphones and web browsers.

The judge presiding over the trial ruled that Google illegally abused its monopoly power to

dominate the search engine market. He has yet to say how he will remedy

Google's behavior. It could range from fines to forcing Google to sell parts of its

business. Google says it plans to appeal.
