Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is threatening to expel more than 50 Democratic lawmakers if they're not back in time for today's special session of the legislature.

They fled the state to prevent the passage of congressional redistricting maps that would

enable Republicans to pick up more seats in next year's midterms.

Andrew Schneider from Houston Public Media reports.

Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement late Sunday saying that by leaving

Texas during the special session, Democrats had abandoned their offices. Abbott says under the state

constitution, he can have their offices declared vacant and named their replacements. Democratic

Representative James Telerico spoke from Illinois. I mean, at that point, you're talking about

a banana republic where, you know, one man is able to pick and choose the members of the legislature.

This is exactly why we are breaking quorum. Democrats' response to Governor Abbott's threat came

in a statement from House Democratic leader Gene Wu with a threat of his own, quote,

come and take it, effectively daring the governor to expel him and his colleagues.
