Former President Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to four felony charges.

As NPR's Barbara Spron explains, the charges accused Trump of conspiring to overturn the

results of the 2020 election.

In a post on Trump's social media platform Truth Social, the former president said, quote,

I need one more indictment to ensure my election.

But his tone was more sober in the DC courtroom, where he stated his name and age and listened

as the judge read the four felony charges against him.

Trump pleaded not guilty.

The judge said the most important condition of his release is not committing any new crimes,

which could lead to him being detained or add to the sentence he could eventually face.

She told Trump it's a crime to influence a juror or try to threaten or bribe a witness

connected to the case.

Trump said he understood.

The trial date will be set at the first hearing on August 28th.
