Former President Donald Trump will face a federal trial in May of 2024 over allegations

he refused to return classified documents.

MPR's Kerry Johnson reports Trump has hoped to postpone the trial till after the election.

Judge Aileen Cannon has set the trial date for May 20, 2024.

Trump is accused of dozens of counts of willful retention of national security papers,

shorted his floor to resort, as well as conspiring to obstruct justice.

The former president and his valet Walton Aura also charged in the case, have pleaded

not guilty.

Special counsel Jack Smith had pushed for a trial this December.

But the judge says there's lots of papers and video evidence for the defense to review

in the case.

Trump is set for a separate criminal trial in March 2024 in New York over alleged hush

money payments he made to adult film star Stormy Daniels.
