Live from NPR News in Washington. I'm Dave Mattingley. Iran's supreme leader is vowing his country will

inflict severe punishment on Israel after Israeli forces launched airstrikes against targets across Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke about the military action earlier today.

We targeted Iran's main enrichment facility in Natanz. We targeted Iran's leading nuclear

scientists working on the Iranian bomb. We also struck at the heart of Iran's ballistic missile

program. The Israeli military says the strikes were designed to thwart Iran's nuclear program and to remove threats to Israel.

Tehran has long insisted its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, including energy.

Congressional leaders appear divided in their response to yesterday's incident in Los Angeles

at a press conference being held by Homeland Security Secretary

Christine Noam. Democratic Senator Alex Padilla of California was forcibly removed after entering

the room, saying he had questions for Noam about the presence of National Guard troops and Marines in

L.A. Joshua Yeager with member station KVPR reports.

Homeland Security officers tackled Padilla to the ground before handcuffing and removing him

from the press event.

Fellow California Senator Adam Schiff says Padilla was performing important oversight duties

as an elected member of Congress.

If they'll do that to Alex Padilla, then what will they do to a farm worker in the field or someone else in a garment factory who is trying to assert their rights or express themselves?

I think every American should be deeply concerned by what they're saying.

Noam defended her agency's actions, accusing Padilla of, quote, disrespectful political theater.
