President Biden and other world leaders

marked the 80th anniversary of World War II invasion

known as D-Day holding ceremonies in Normandy, France.

As NPR's Tamar Keith reports, Biden met dozens of World War II veterans, including more than 30 who stormed

the beaches on D-Day.

In his remarks, Biden nodded to the reality that with many of these veterans more than a hundred

years old, their voices may be lost to time.

We can't allow what happened here, be lost in the silence of the years to come.

We must remember it.

We must honor it and live it, and we must remember. The fact that they were heroes

here that day does not absolve us from what we have to do today. Democracy is never guaranteed, he said, and every generation must fight for it.

Biden referenced the fight happening today in Ukraine as it tries to defend itself from Russia

and its expansionist aims.
