Live from NPR News in Washington, encore of a Coleman, members of the House Rules Committee

will meet today to discuss the tentative agreement that would raise the nation's debt ceiling.

NPR's Windsor Johnson reports, after weeks of tense negotiation, President Biden and

House Republicans struck a deal Saturday, just days before a deadline to averted a fault.

President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy are trying to push this through both chambers

of Congress before June 5th.

The agreement was expected to be the earliest the U.S. could run out of money to pay its bills.

Leaders in both parties are working to convince enough of their members to vote for the deal,

which contains provisions that lawmakers on each side of the aisle don't support.

The agreement would raise the debt ceiling for the next two years and cap some government

spending.

It also includes tougher requirements for some federal assistance programs and regulatory

changes to speed up the permitting process for energy projects.

The Republican-led House is expected to vote on the bill on Wednesday.
