Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has filed official paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission

to run for president.

As NPR's Lane Amor reports, the filing comes just as he's expected to announce his candidacy.

The Sanctus will launch his campaign in a Twitter space's conversation with executive chairman

of the company Elon Musk.

That announcement is expected shortly.

The Florida Governor has long been a potential 2024 contender, and within the Republican

primary field he pulls second behind former president Trump.

And Trump stands as a solid primary frontrunner right now.

Recent surveys show him ahead of DeSantis by around 30 points.

Still, DeSantis joins the race as a top opponent for the former president, whose campaign

and aligned political action committee have already spent millions in attack ads against

him.

An emotional president Biden marked the anniversary of the attack and in the elementary school in

Evality, Texas, that claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers.

Speaking of the White House today, the president used the sombre occasion to issue a bipartisan

call for stricter gun laws in the U.S.

to establish universal background checks?
