Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Rylan Barton. The Senate has advanced a bill that tries to force

0:06.7

President Trump to end the Iran war. The measure still has to pass the House. It would require Trump to

0:12.0

either gain congressional approval for the war or withdraw troops. The vote showed the growing

0:17.1

number of Republicans defying the president's wishes on the war. Louisiana Republican

0:21.1

Senator Bill Cassidy flipped to support the measure. Cassidy lost a primary election over the weekend

0:26.2

after Trump endorsed his opponent. The president is endorsing Attorney General Ken Paxton of Texas

0:32.1

over incumbent John Cornyn in the U.S. Senate race. The move gives Paxton an advantage as early voting takes place.

0:39.2

Democratic nominee James Tolariko says it doesn't change anything for him. The Texas newsroom's

0:43.9

Blaise Ganey has more. In response to Trump's endorsement of Paxton, Tolariko says that no

0:50.0

matter his opponent, he's ultimately running against, quote, the billionaire mega donors in their

0:54.9

corrupt political system, unquote. A May poll released by the Barbara Jordan Policy Research and

1:00.5

Survey Center at Texas Southern University shows Tala Rico tied or within a point of either

1:06.6

Republican candidate. Tolariko says he is unbothered by Trump's move because his movement is to make

1:12.6

Texas for working people and not about party politics. If Tala Rico wins in November, he'd be the

1:18.5

first Democrat elected statewide in Texas in three decades. For NPR News, I'm Blaise Ganey in Austin.

The U.S. government has agreed to permanently drop tax claims against

1:29.2

President Trump. It's part of a deal to resolve Trump's $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS over the leak of

1:35.2

his tax returns. The U.S. is, quote, forever barred and precluded from examining or prosecuting Trump,

1:41.4

his sons and the Trump organization's current tax issues, according to a one-page document posted on the DOJ website.

And the Council on American Islamic Relations is calling on law enforcement to boost presence around mosques after yesterday's deadly shooting at an Islamic center in San Diego.

NPR's Jason DeRose reports.
