Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Herbst. Taiwan is pushing back after President Trump said he hasn't decided whether to go ahead with a major weapons sale to the island.

Ashish Valentine reports from Taipei. Trump's hesitation worries many that he may roll back American support in return for concessions from China.

Taiwan's presidential spokesperson Karen Guo says U.S. arms sales don't just keep Taiwan safe

to help preserve stability throughout the region. Her statement came after Trump,

fresh from a summit with China's Xi Jinping, told reporters he hadn't made up his mind

on a planned $14 billion U.S. weapons package

for Taipei that awaits his approval. China opposes U.S. arms sales to the island democracy,

which it claims is its own territory. Trump described the sale as a very good negotiating chip,

and also suggested he may speak directly about it with Taiwan's president, La Ching De.

Gun rights groups say they're more optimistic about their chances to overturn regional bans on AR-15 rifles

now that the Justice Department has taken up that cause.

And here's Martin Costi reports the DOJ is now framing this as a civil rights issue.

Groups like gun owners of America have welcomed the DOJ's recent creation of a Second Amendment

section inside its Civil Rights Division, which is now suing the city of Denver for restricting

access to firearms such as AR-15s. On the gun control side, Adam Skaggs of Gifford's Law

Center says the DOJ may boost efforts to roll back such restrictions.

The resources and the credibility to the extent DOJ is retaining credibility of the government are significant.
