President Trump has complicated the question of how high he wants tariffs on Chinese goods to go,

suggesting lowering those taxes from 145 to 80%.

That announcement comes as top U.S. economic officials

prepare to meet with their Chinese counterparts,

and peers Daniel Kurtzleben has more.

In a morning social media post, President Trump wrote, quote,

80% tariff on China seems right, up to Scott B,

referring to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent,

who is meeting with Chinese economic officials this weekend about tariffs.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt addressed the president's post.

The president still remains with his position that he is not going to unilaterally bring down tariffs on China.

We need to see concessions from them as well.

She added that 80 was a number the president, quote, threw out there.

While 80 percent would be a big drop from the current 145% tariffs on many Chinese goods,

it is still very high and may not ease consumer fears.
