A crowd in St. Peter's Square erupting in cheers today as they got their first view of a new Pope.

The Chicago-born missionary, Robert Prevue, was becoming the first ever American Pontiff

to lead the 1.4 billion-member Catholic Church.

Prevost will go by Pope Leo the 14th, spoken Italian through an interpreter.

He succeeds the late Pope Francis.

The 69-year-old Leo was viewed by many as a compromise between the conservative and more liberal factions of the 1.4 billion member Catholic Church.

The Catholic Church's new Pope is American, but also a naturalized Peruvian citizen. He spent

decades there. According to those who know him, he left a long legacy as a faithful, accessible religious servant.
