Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Herbst. A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon,

and announced by President Trump, is now in effect. This after Iran said it wouldn't engage in

further ceasefire talks with the U.S. unless a ceasefire between those two countries was in place.

It's their first direct diplomatic talk in

decades, though the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah wasn't at the table. Civilians were also

impacted by Israel's attacks. And Pierce Kat Lonsdorf says there are more than a million people

displaced by the war. That's about a fifth of the population. Here in Beirut, there are

whole parking lots full of tents and people using the stadium here for shelter or sleeping in

schools. Most of those people will not be allowed to return home yet, if ever. Israel has

demolished more than 40,000 homes in the south, according to Lebanese officials, taking over

whole villages to create what it

calls a security buffer zone to keep Hezbollah from firing rockets into Israel. Impiers-Cant

Law and Storff reporting from Beirut. The Senate again rejected a bid to block arms sales to Israel,

but several Democrats who previously opposed such efforts voted in favor of the measure citing growing

concerns about the war with Iran.

36 Democrats voted to advance a measure to cancel the sale of 1,000-pound bombs.

40 Democrats, some 85 percent of the caucus, supported blocking the sale of bulldozers used

by Israel and Lebanon and Gaza to level homes and neighborhoods.

Republicans voted to block the measures. Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona was among the roughly dozen Democrats who supported blocking the transfers after previously opposing similar measures.

We are in a moment where we have to ask ourselves,

does this bring us closer to peace and security?
