Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. The White House is once again defending its

decision to deport a man from Maryland. Kilmar, Obrego Garcia, a Salvadoran citizen who had lived in the U.S. for nearly 15 years,

was deported to El Salvador despite being granted protections by a U.S. immigration judge.

White House advisor, Stephen Miller, claims the Trump administration had every right to deport him.

So we had a deportation order that was valid, which meant that under our law, he's not even

allowed to be present in the United States and had to be returned because of the foreign

terrorist designation. During a meeting at the White House today, the president of El Salvador

said he has no intentions of returning someone that the U.S. considers to be a gang member

and a terrorist. Abrago Garcia has never been charged with a crime. He's currently being held at the

Terrorism Confinement Center, a maximum security prison outside of the capital, San Salvador.

Stocks rose today after the Trump administration granted a partial reprie from some of its

steep new tariffs on imports from China.
