European leaders of suspended retaliatory sanctions against the U.S., NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports the move comes after President Trump announced a 90-day pause on a second round of tariffs on dozens of countries, including the EU.

The EU was planning to target $23 billion of U.S. imports, including fruit,

woods, soybeans, copper, and motorbikes in three different waves. But it has paused its

counter tariffs after President Trump dropped his 20% increase on almost all EU goods. A 10% baseline

tariff remains on all imports to the United States.

The EU wants to pursue talks with the Trump administration to avoid an all-out trade war.

We want to give negotiations a chance, said Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission President, on X.

She added, if negotiations are not satisfactory, the EU's countermeasures

will kick in. Eleanor Beardsley, NPR News, Paris. Pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S. are on the

rise over a five-year period. NPR Selena Simmons-Duffin reports a maternal mortality rate in the U.S.

was already higher than other wealthy countries. What is the pattern of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S.? That was the question researchers

at the National Institute of Health, along with colleagues at Harvard, set out to answer.

They used national data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to find all

pregnancy-related deaths among women between age 15 and 54 from the year

2018 to 2022. They looked at deaths that occurred, quote, during pregnancy or within one year of

the end of pregnancy from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy. The results published

this week in JAMA Network Open show the

rate increased nationally over that time from 25 deaths per 100,000 births to 32 deaths per
