Live from NPR News in Washington. I'm Janine Hurst. The Biden administration is concerned

that Israel doesn't recognize that its global reputation has been damaged

over the war in Gaza. That's according to a State Department assessment as

N-Pierz Daniel Estrin reports from Tel Aviv.

According to a State Department memo obtained by NPR, Assistant Secretary Bill Russo

told Israeli officials last week that the U.S. and Israel face a major credibility

problem over the war.

The memo says Israeli officials disagreed and said the majority in the U.S. and Europe still

supports Israel. The State Department memo says quote the Israeli seemed oblivious

to the fact that they are facing major possibly generational damage to their

reputation in Tel Aviv Friday secretary of state Anthony Blinkin said an Israeli military operation in the city of

Rafah, where more than a million people are sheltering, would risk, quote, further isolating

Israel around the world.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said a Raffa operation against Hamas

would happen without U.S. support if necessary.
