Live from nPR news in Washington. I'm Jack Spear. The Justice Department in more than a dozen

states are suing Apple, alleging the tech giant violated antitrust laws by

making it difficult for rivals to compete.

As NPR's Bobby Allen explains,

it's the latest any monopoly suit filed against Silicon Valley.

Authorities say Apple has for years built an uneven playing field

and protected it to become one of the world's richest companies.

Prosecutors say when it comes to payments, messaging, and downloading apps on iPhones,

Apple has used its power to block competitors and stifle competition in violation of antitrust laws.

For customers, the suit argues this has meant fewer options for phones, apps, and smart watches,

and higher prices.

Apple has described the Justice Department suit as government overreach that would make Apple products

less innovative and secure.

Some of the laws at play here are 130 years old and were crafted to rein in robber barons in the steel and railroad industries.
