supports a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine proposed by the U.S., but with preconditions.

The proposal was agreed to by Kiev earlier this week following talks in Jetta Saudi Arabia.

NPR's Eleanor Beardsley in Kiev sampled some reaction in Ukraine's capital.

Ukrainians do not trust Putin, but they do want to end the war.

21-year-old Bardan is a university student in Kyiv.

He doesn't want to give his last name.

We can trust Putin, but we have to try because the war so long and we are tired, and

we need to stop it.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the U.S. should be on guard against Kremlin manipulation.

Putin is setting preconditions, said Zelensky, because he is afraid to tell President Trump directly that he wants to continue this war.

Europeans who have seen Putin break numerous ceasefires over the last decade are wary.

Analysts say Putin is doing everything he can to please Trump so he can use him.
