Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country is suspending its participation in the

new START treaty with the United States.

MPR's Jeff Bromfield reports it's the latest blow to arms control between the two superpowers.

The new START treaty sets limits on the number of nuclear weapons the U.S. and Russia are

allowed to deploy.

It's set to run through February of 2026, but both the pandemic and the war in Ukraine

have created problems for the treaty.

Required inspections of nuclear weapons came to a halt when COVID-19 started to spread

and never resumed.

Russia canceled a meeting with the U.S. to discuss reviving the inspection process late

last year, and last month the U.S. found Russia in violation of the treaty.

The suspension of new START comes just a few years after the U.S. and Russia ended two

other treaties designed to limit the danger of nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, President Biden, speaking in Warsaw, Poland, today says Russia has committed

crimes against humanity.
